The History of The Associated General Contractors of Ohio

In the 1960s, Ohio’s commercial building contractors faced significant challenges in politics and labor, often battling them independently through regional chapters. While there was a statewide AGC chapter for heavy and highway contractors, commercial contractors lacked unified representation.
Recognizing the need for collective action, the Ohio Council of AGC Chapters was formed to address labor and legislative issues, but it soon became clear that a stronger, statewide organization was needed. Visionaries like E. Grant Hesser and T.C. Fitzpatrick led the charge, bringing contractors together to amplify their influence.
Hesser, a passionate advocate for collaboration, believed in the power of shared knowledge and unity. With Fitzpatrick, who became AGC of Ohio’s first president, they worked with leaders like A.J.P. Martini, William A. Ferris, and Parker Garwick to establish the organization.
In 1971, AGC of Ohio officially received its charter from AGC of America. Since then, the association has grown into a powerful voice for Ohio’s commercial construction industry. Through the leadership of its executive directors, AGC of Ohio continues to champion the industry’s success through unity and collaboration.
